The Snow

Winter was always Toby’s favorite time of the year. The sun hid away from the world for longer and allowed him the chance to walk the streets during "normal" times.

Well, human versions of "normal" anyway.

He loved the chance to go out on the streets with Dorian. To see his lover’s face and know it was more beautiful than literally any other that surrounded them. He loved scandalizing the little old ladies who were still finishing their errands, the small children whose mothers couldn’t cover their eyes quickly enough, the men who secretly wished they were as lucky as he. Kissing Dorian was - and always would be - one of his favorite things in the multiverse, and Toby would relish in showing off to the whole of London that he was breaking the mold of his monstrosity to love someone.

But what he loved the most about winter? The snow.

Well, rather, the snow with Dorian.

They ventured out often at night together while the snow fell from cloudy London skies. Down the slushy or ice-covered streets they wandered, hand-in-hand as the snow settled across rooftops and dark, unruly curls alike. Cigarette in hand to ground himself, they would find the best places to take in the beauty that was the cold and unforgiving nature of winter. Parks with flowers coated in ice. Fountains filled with snow. Outdoor seating areas while they sipped hot coffee.

Those were truly the best of times. Gorgeous, infuriating man on one arm and a free hand to catch snowflakes like a child. It was the kind of magic that could never be bottled, but was always there, if one had the patience to wait for the seasons to change.

Toby was always reluctant to go back to the house. Even with Dorian pulling at his coat or grumbling at him about the hour or the cold, the vampire always smiled that smile at least once to get his way.

"I'm not ready to go back just yet,” he’d say. “Can’t we stay out a little longer?"

It never surprised him to get his way, but being indulged made their time recovering in front of a fire at home that much better. It made falling asleep way too early enjoyable and being awake before Noon the next day reasonable. For snow with his soulmate, Toby would do just about anything.
